What's the difference between Chesterton and a traditional private school?

Our flexible hybrid structure academic program is available to our students both online and at a local campus in Glendale. Rather than having to be driven outside their city every day to attend a liberal arts school, our students attend class close to where they live and in the comfort and safety of their own homes.

CSLA’s pedagogy employs the classical model, which emphasizes grammar (absorbing facts and vocabulary), logic (making sense of the facts) and rhetoric (writing and articulating). Students read primary sources to experience the author’s perspective. We also use a hybrid model of learning as the basis for our model of classical online education in Glendale.

How does the hybrid model work?

The hybrid model is similar to a university. Students attend class twice a week to receive in-person instructions, engage in dialogue, present papers and engage in other academic activities. This model of education is commonly referred to as the 60/40 Model.

• 40% of the week in class
• 60% of the week completing assignments independently while receiving online instructions from faculty

Students will attend class once a week online and twice a week in-person at First Glendale Presbyterian Church, located at 125 S Louise St., Glendale, CA 91205

What are the benefits of a hybrid system?

Efficiency

Elimination of classroom distractions, busywork and classroom management issues. It’s estimated that students only complete, on average, three hours of learning in school every day. More learning is our objective.

Affordability

We believe all families ought to have the opportunity to receive an elite education. Here at Chesterton School of Liberal Arts we are dedicated to keeping tuition low to accommodate our community.

Transparency

Parents will have the ability through our LMS to observe what their student is learning, teacher feedback, scores on exams and login information in real time.

Flexibility

Families will not be so restricted by traditional school scheduling as the flex model lends itself to flexible scheduling for all.

What grades does Chesterton teach?

We’re currently accepting 6th, 7th and 8th graders and will begin accepting 9th and 10th graders Fall 2019.

What curriculum is Chesterton using?

Chesterton School will partially employ the Hillsdale curriculum for the humanities, along with the Accelerate curriculum for math and science.

What are the benefits of a classical online education in Glendale?

• Our flexible hybrid structure academic program is available to our students both online and at a local campus in Glendale. Rather than having to be driven outside their city every day to attend a liberal arts school, our students attend class close to where they live and in the comfort and safety of their own homes.
• Students and parents will come to appreciate how a meaningful and gratifying education requires time and dedication, because repetition, rather than rote memorization, helps solidify memory.
• Classical education helps the student to cultivate the love and pursuit of truth, goodness and beauty. Students work in a way that ensures mastery. Students will master a few subjects, rather than pursue many subjects disjointedly.
• Students need to be provided a respite for reflection, good conversation and debate to help retain content and develop coherent abstract thought.

How does the language immersion program work?

Students study culturally relevant stories while trying to understand the structure of the second language, then compare what they’re absorbing to English. As they learn two different languages, they will master different parts of the languages, identify words and their roots and break down sentences.

Our foreign language immersion program focuses on organically developing the student’s verbal fluency and introducing them to other cultures and ways of thinking.
